Trauma and adults

When something happens to us that is traumatic, it may feel like we are never going to feel normal again.  Things that were once routine may now feel overwhelming or impossible.  Even if our rational brain tells us that we are safe, it may be difficult to feel that way.

Traumas from the past may seem to permeate our lives.  The resulting unhealthy cycles of behavior can cause us to stumble over and over.  They can even leave us vulnerable to further trauma due to struggles with making choices that are healthy for ourselves.

We may be struggling with something that doesn’t fit the traditional standard of what is traumatic; trauma isn’t exclusive to combat veterans, victims of violence, or disaster survivors.  There are many difficult circumstances which may impact our nervous system in severe ways.

The industry standard treatment for trauma is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).  EMDR assists the natural healing process of the brain by reprocessing memories without the distressing elements.  Click here to learn more about EMDR.
